Hello, my name is Frédérick-Ann. I am a student at Ahuntsic College and I've been studying there for the past two and a half years. My field of study is psychology, my program is called Social Science - the Individual. I am creating this glossary related to my studies in hope to help others. This glossary will include words and terms that you may hear if you want to learn about psychology.

anxiety
noun
A nervous disorder characterized by a state of excessive uneasiness and apprehension, typically with compulsive behavior or panic attacks. or A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.
Example: He felt a surge of ANXIETY.

The way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others.
Example: It is often seen that one's BEHAVIOR varies depending on with whom we are.

cognition
noun
The mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding trough thought, experience, and the senses.
Example: Intelligence is connected with COGNITION but personality incorporates conation.

Expending conscious effort to solve personal and interpersonal problems, and seeking to master, minimize or tolerate stress or conflict.
Example: COPING with the aftermath of something traumatic is something personal and cannot be done by someone else except oneself.

Example: His DEPENDANCE to drugs is worrying me.

An affective state of consciousness in wich joy, sorrow, fear, hate is experienced.
Example: During turning points of one's life, it is expected to feel strong EMOTIONS.

The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Example: EMPATHY is a crucial tool to have, since it is what we use to connect with others and make them feel understood.

The feeling of being upset or annoyed because of an inability to change or achieve something.
Example: Someone who is experiencing anxiety may also experience FRUSTRATION, for being unable to go about their day without overthinking.

A disease or period of sickness affecting the body or mind.
Example: Mental disorders are often seen as ILLNESSES.

noun
The capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of a person or thing.
Example: Observing the behavior of people close to you may give you an INSIGHT regarding their state of mind.

Make (attitudes or behavior) part of one's nature by learning or unconscious assimilation.
Example: His private emotions and idiosyncracies, and difficulties he experiences in INTERNALIZING the social norms of his community are his business.

A range of symptoms and experiences of a person's internal life that are commonly held to be troubling, confusing or out of the ordinary.
Example: Symptoms of MENTAL DISTRESS can be the external sign of conflict within oneself.

neurosis

A relatively mild mental illness that is not caused by organic disease, involving symptoms of stress (depression, anxiety, obsessive behaviour, hypochondria) but not a radical loss of touch with reality.
Example: She suffered from NEUROSIS last year.

A mental condition characterized by delusions of persecution, unwarranted jealousy, or exaggerated self-importance, typically elaborated into an organised system.
Example: PARANOIA may come with feelings of extreme fear and anxiety regarding one's safety.

placebo
noun
An inactive substance or other intervention that looks the same as, and is given the same way as, an active drug or treatment being tested. The effects of the active drug or other intervention are compared to the effects of the placebo.
Example: While taking part in a study, I was given a PLACEBO pill and couldn't tell the difference between the real thing and the fake.

A severe mental disorder in which thought and emotions are so impaired that contact is lost with external reality.
Example: PSYCHOSIS can sometimes be linked with the excessive use of drugs.

Is an individual's tendency to cope with stress and adversity.
Example: She showed such RESILIENCE after the accident.

Any phenomenon that causes a reaction or response in an organism.
Example: The noise made by the trolley was the STIMULUS in Pavlov's experience.

The treatment of mental or psychological disorders by psychological means.
Example: I've been feeling better ever since I started THERAPY.
